I wanted to share my experience as a reminder that we live in a tropical climate and these climates have parasites. I am realizing this in no big deal, you can treat them easily in the early stages, and most Ticos and warm climate dwelers have protocals they follow to prevent a raging infection. It is us cold climate dwellers that aren't accustomed to these Protocols, or took them too lightly that can feel the full force. I will spare you all the details but I definitely felt the impact, and know first hand they can cause damage internally if left untreated. I wanted to share in hopes that it may prevent others from knowing what that feels like to reach a full blown case.

Note: There is really no point in trying to avoid contact with them in this climate, it is easier to take preventive Protocols.

Look up a full symptoms list to get an idea what to watch out for. A few that should have flagged me were grinding my teeth and intense hot flashes and waking at night. I also began having random twitching like something was hitting my nervous system. Mood swings and inability to control my emotions and thoughts. The full moon was intense as this is their breeding cycle so if last week's full moon was intense for you or your children and there are other symptoms consider taking measures.

Here are a few preventative options you can add to your diet regularly, if you are looking for ideas. Feel free to share if you have other ideas.

Swollow a clove of garlic daily.

Ginger - add to your diet wherever you can. We are drinking ginger, turmeric tea which is so soothing!

Hombre Grande - There is a tree at the community gardens, you can also buy as wood sticks at GB. Put a stick in water for a minute or so and drink. Or prepare similarly (leaving for longer) and utilize in an Enema.

Pumpkin Seeds help to paralyze them. (Note if anyone sees some when you are shopping will you pick me up a very large package?)

Black Walnut - Jamie has agreed to bring some in from Canada mid December, let me know if you would like some.

Diatomaceous Earth - an excellent ‘supplement’ to take which is a natural anti-parasite (it has been used for thousands of years to prevent parasites)… it is inert and hence does not react with other ‘medicines/substances’ and is an extremely safe and gentle substance for the young, old and the infirm and can be taken daily without any harmful effects. It also doesn’t negatively effect one’s microbiome as it’s works by mechanical action rather than through ‘antibiotic/antimicrobial action’. In fact it helps to keep one’s gut/intestines/microbiome happy and healthy! It also acts as an excellent all round detoxifier (due to its negative charge it helps to remove toxins, Protozoa, heavy metals, fungi and ‘bad bacteria’) and a big cherry on top is that it is also rich in silica, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc which makes it’s a great daily health supplement!!

There is a study out of Nicaragua showing Papaya seeds in honey are a very effective treatment. Around 1 tbsp per day of air dried Papaya seeds in honey for 7 days. Don't overdo the papaya seeds as large amounts aren't healthy.

If you think you may already have an infection that requires a more serious treatment here is the medications Rosita suggested, you can pick them up at the pharmacy.
Nitazoxanida 500mg
Take 1 pill each 12 hours x 3 days
Probiotics: Enterogermina Plus.
1 envelop diluted in water x 5 days

I know this is a topic we don't love thinking or talking about but it is so important to helping us stay healthy. Wishing all great health!

It’s also a good idea to pulse treatments like this every 22 days with a few weeks rest. Taking Quassia daily isn’t recommended long term bc it will destroy the microbiome.
Jacaranda flowers are also traditional anti amoebic treatments.
What’s most important is clean hands, as the most common parasites are spread by feces, not usually in water systems in Costa Rica.
Also be aware the a whole clove of garlic can be very irritating to gut mucosa, so being aware of your own body’s response to raw or cooked garlic.
